History of Gambling in Idaho
Looking at the history of casinos in Idaho, slot machines were legal between 1947 and 1953. However, the state legislature fought against their rising popularity in Idaho and eventually closed a legal loophole that allowed them in the state.
Then in 1963, horse racing was legalized with off-track betting being allowed in the 70s. Race tracks experienced a drop in revenue when tribal casinos started offering slots and video poker. They then introduced historical racing machines in 2013 to help the tracks survive. However, lawmakers repealed historical racing in 2015.
The last greyhound racing track in Idaho was closed in 1995 and off-track betting stopped on July 1, 1999.
